February 15, 2019 - Several years ago we collaborated with the Southeastern Mental Health Authority to develop a community gay straight alliance, or GSA. The purpose of this group was simple, offer a safe and welcoming place for anyone to be supported, accepted, and heard. We are proud to say the group continues to flourish.
GSA groups are popular amongst schools and colleges as they support people of various sexualities and gender identities, providing a safe space for honest, open communication. Through group discussions, activity planning, and peer education and support, GSAs accomplish a number of objectives, including:
- helping people celebrate their difference in sexuality and gender identity
- providing support for people in their coming out processes
- engaging in meaningful conversation about issues related to one’s sexuality or gender identity
- developing community experiences in connecting to a broader community of LGBTQI people
- fostering alliances for those who support LGBTQI individuals
The GSA that was started by Reliance Health and the Southeastern Mental Health Authority continues to grow, bringing the community together. They attend events, coordinate outings, hosts speakers and gatherings, share meals and support each other. They’re driven to connect with other LGBTQI groups and individuals to create solidarity, connection, and resources while emphasizing a strong sense of community amongst their members. The group is always open to new ideas and invites anyone who is interested to participate. The GSA wants to celebrate diversity amongst one another while bringing that diversity to the community as a whole.
