August 24, 2017 - Members of our Teamworks Clubhouse have experienced substantial growth this summer. Each Monday, members have been given the opportunity to get out on the water in 5 kayaks, purchased through a generous grant from the Dime Foundation. These adventures have been monumental in assisting members in gaining confidence, overcoming anxiety, developing leadership skills, and building connections with others.

As part of each kayaking trip participants help with loading and unloading the kayaks, paddles, and life jackets. They assist each other with the gear, as well as getting in and out of the boats. As they set out onto the water, members are taught how to paddle and maneuver their kayaks. While first timers start off shaky and uncertain, with support from their peers and time to adapt, they quickly develop confidence in their abilities. Through their kayaking adventures individuals are connecting with each other, learning from each other, and providing the support needed to overcome fears and hesitations.

Teamworks’ kayaking trips have proven to be tremendous confidence boosters, enhancing the mental wellness of all involved. More and more individuals are asking to participate, however, in order to expand the program, more resources are needed. Specifically, transportation for the kayaks. With only one staff vehicle equipped to transport kayaks, our ability to offer more outings is limited. If you know of any resources to assist in getting kayaks to and from the water, we would love to hear from you! Until then, we plan to continue to offer our weekly outings as long as the weather cooperates.
